Gilchrist County is situated in North Central Florida and is one of Florida's youngest counties, established in 1925. With a small population of around 18,000, it is primarily agricultural.
Named for former Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist, the county is one of the state's last to be formed. The economy is largely based on farming and timber.
The county is inland and is thus less prone to hurricanes but can still experience flooding and severe storms.
